Bottleneck
The slowest step in a process that limits the overall throughput of the system.
In a supply chain, a bottleneck is the constrained resource (a machine, dock door, supplier, or person) whose capacity caps the throughput of the entire chain. The Theory of Constraints recommends scheduling all work around the bottleneck and protecting it with strategic buffers.
